Ocimum xcitriodorum Annual. Sun to Partial Sun Height: 14 – 28” Width 8-10” Originally named for its development in Austin, Texas, (also known as the “Lesbos or Greek Column” basil) is a hybrid basil with small leaves, a columnar shape and a very sweet clove and citrus aroma.
It generally does not flower, so it is easy to manage and is a wonderful addition to any herb garden.
Aussie Sweetie generally will not produce any flowers. It likes the full sun but is not drought tolerant so keep it watered. This basil likes the heat and warm soil as long as it gets enough water. It requires moderately rich soil and will grow straight up to a height of 3-4 feet. Although it is an annual, this basil can make it through a mild winter on the south side of the house.
Aussie Sweetie has a very sweet flavor with a slight cinnamon taste. It is originally from Australia which is where it gets its’ name. The leaves are small so it requires a lot more time to gather enough for a pesto but it is great in salads, tomato sauces and fish. Add the leaves during the last few minutes of the cooking process for best results because the leaves are very tender.
